One step onto this land seven years ago and we knew we were home. And now our family shares this 3.3 acre oasis of gardens, animals and history with people from all over the world.
At the center of our property is the farmhouse that houses our restaurant. This is the original homestead of the Henderson Family, who were one of the founding families of the community of Margate. Built in the 1880's, not only were we blessed in finding a traditional island farmhouse, but also the land around it.
Both the house and the land reflect an earlier time, before the world was made of plastic and everything
was disposable. Not only does the woodwork, windows, and architecture of the farmhouse reflect the
workmanship of a time gone by, but so does the land. To be on soil that was never used for modern
agricultural cropping makes for a very healthy rich soil. It is one of the reasons we believe in
sustainable organic farming for our Island.
Many people ask:
"Where does the name "Shipwright's" come from?"
The name comes from our own history, we began as a restaurant (spring 1998)
in the village of Tyne Valley, a half hour west of here. The area was well
know for it ships and shipbuilders in the 1800's. A Shipwright is
a shipbuilder as a wheelwright, makes wheels.

Whether you are visiting the Island, spending your summer here, or you are an Islander, you are welcome to stroll through the gardens or see what the ducks are up to, where the chickens are, and see what has arrived new in the barn.
If you would like to join us for lunch or dinner you can click on our contact page to see how to make a reservation with us. Or you can stop by the kitchen for some freshly baked treats, including our own Potato and Oat Bread. These go well with the delicious homemade preserves we offer for sale.
If you wish to cook your own feast at home or cottage you may want to see what we have for sale from the garden including, as per the season, organic vegetables and fruits. And we even offer a wonderful selection of perennials grown right here on our farm. You can check out our "Plant Sales" tab for that list.
It has been 10 years since "Shipwright's" was started, and it has been an amazing journey for our family. Little did we know the energy and commitment it would take. Now more than ever we are committed to producing meals and foods for our guests that are responsible both to our environmental future and our Island heritage. It is all about the taste and we invite you to come and taste the difference.
One of our "regulars" remarked last summer "soon you will just be that restaurant in the famous gardens". We smile and give thanks for the changes each year brings. Shipwright's is a dining and rural Island experience-not to be missed.
